The name of the Sunny South B&B was inspired by the fictitious character "Sunny South Sam".    He was created by

the publicity department of the Southern Railway Company to promote their holiday destinations in the "Sunny South" during the 1930's.

The cheerful railway guard appeared on posters, leaflets and in publications, offering "advice" and information on holiday resorts in Southern England, boasting high temperatures, hours of sunshine,  journey times and other enlightening facts designed to tempt the holiday makers of the period.

Holiday advertising diminished with the wartime threat of invasion, and "Sunny South Sam"

disappeared from the scene during the dark days of the Second World War.

The "Sunny South" B&B overlooks the restored Southern Railway Branch line at Swanage, and once again steam trains can be seen carrying happy holidaymakers to our popular Victorian seaside resort, a scene we're sure Sunny South Sam would have  approved of!
